School Values: Manawanuitanga Wks 4-6

Manawanuitanga at Ōwairaka School is a learning-focused value.

Important learning behaviours form our three statements:

  • Persistence: Never give up and learn from our mistakes. Keep trying!
  • Resilience: Growth comes from being positive and bouncing back from difficult things.
  • Love Learning: Be a student for your whole life and learn something new every day.

Our particular goals for these next weeks are:

Listen Carefully,

Follow Instructions,

Focus on your own Learning, and

Try your Best!

These things will help students to get the most out of our precious class time.

Keep Sunsmart!

New Zealand sun is fierce! Make sure you follow these simple rules to stay safe in the sun.

Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen, and Slap on a hat!

Look at Nino the Dino: he’s being Sunsmart by wearing a nice, big hat. Good on you, Nino! Remember: big hats are better. See below for examples!

Nino the Dino is Sunsmart!

Science Box Exploration of Space

Last week Room 19 had a chance to explore the Space Science Box. We learnt about:

  • Planets – we found out the size of planets in comparison to each other using playdough models. Did you know Jupiter is the largest planet which could fit 1300 Earths!
  • Galaxies – How astronomically huge galaxies are, the 3 different types (spiral, elliptical and irregular). Did you know that Earth is in the Milky Way and that we are not the only galaxy in the universe?
  • Moon craters – the moon is covered in craters that will never go away because there is no wind or environmental growth on the moon to blow them away or cover them over
  • Shadows – we used chalk to mark out our shadows at 3 different times during the day and looked at the difference when the sun was lower and higher in the sky, Can you guess when our shadow shape was smallest?
  • Astronaut Nappies – did you know that astronauts wear nappies in space!! They wear a special Maximum Absorbency Garment (MAG) that is like a nappy during lift off and landing because they can’t exactly use the bathroom then!

We had a great time exploring. Please ask us any questions you may have and let us know some interesting facts about space that you know.

School Values W1-3 – Manaakitanga

We have a new saying at Ōwairaka: Manaakitanga everywhere and always!

What is Manaakitanga? It is one of our 3 School Values and fits very well with our 2 school rules: Be Kind and Be Safe. We show Manaakitanga when we are caring, respectful, and responsible.

At Ōwairaka, we have many opportunities for students (and adults!) to show Manaakitanga, so use those Kind Words, Friendly Voices, and Helping Hands wherever you go in the school and take these great practices home with you, too!
